For Jakartans

What makes Jakartans rumbling these days besides the announcement of governor and vice governor candidates for gubernatorial election in 2017? After the incumbent Basuki Tjahaja Purnama (Ahok) announced couples month ago that he won’t go thorugh independent scheme with Teman Ahok for the election, he decided to accept the proposal and support from some parties such as the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP), NasDem, the People's Conscience Party (Hanura), and Golkar along with his companion, Djarot Saiful Hidayat. Therefore, some other parties started to make comparison and research to carry their own candidates. Voila, the Cikeas coalition consisting of he Democratic Party, the National Mandate Party (PAN), the United Development Party (PPP) and the National Awakening Party (PKB) unexpectedly announced the pair of Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono and Sylviana Murti to join the competition. On the other hand, the Gerindra and Prosperous Justice (PKS) parties officially endorsed Anies Baswedan, the former Education Minister, and the businessman Sandiaga Uno for the election.

Following this fact, I would be saying that this will be an interesting and thrilling election. The three pairs of candidates will show the citizens about their promising programs, fair vision and mission, and healthy campaign. In my opinion, this will also be the trigger to reduce and dissolve black and negative campaign since the incumbent governor always receives racial and religion sentiment, making it unhealthy condition for the citizens. Ideally, the upcoming capital city gubernatorial election should be the representative of election for this country.

The incumbent candidates Ahok-Djarot have shown some positive impact and progress for Jakarta. Some rivers, traditional market, community health centers (Puskesmas), parking system and other public services have been upgraded during recent years. Moreover, the welfare of civil servants in the city has also been increased as the allowances provided for those who has been performed well on their tasks. However, Ahok sometimes shows his anger in front of public and cameras which is considered as his weakness for public to vote him in the election.

The former Indonesia President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY) joined the competition by proposing his first son, Agus Yudhoyono as the governor candidate through the Cikeas coalition. It can not be denied that SBY considered as the man who can’t be moved, like The Script’s blackboard chart song, to run and rule this country. Agus who has shown amout of achievements in the military stopped his career and turned it to the political area. Mostly, public deplored his action while some others supported his action to join the competition. Another suprising fact is that the Agus’ pair for the election, Sylviana Murti who has been received good response by public as the civil servants in the city, particularly in the education area. Some people in general might be not recognizing her well, causing problems for them.

Anies-Sandiaga would be the calmest and most heartwarming candidates as they always put smiles in the camera. After being reshuffled in past months, public might be questioning what will be the next movement by Anies for the country. Then, he suprisingly answered through the declaration by Gerindra chairman Prabowo Subianto. Anies continues his self campaign Turun Tangan (to go to the field) for better Indonesia. Public have recognized his ambition to rule the country, starting from joining the Democrat Party presidential convention in 2014, taking part as the spokesperson for Jokowi’s presidential campaign in the same year, and directing the Education Ministry until July this year. Now, he accepted the proposal to join the gubernatorial election although previously Sandiaga Uno was attracting public to come as the governor candidate.

It is time for the Jakartans to support, enjoy, and involve in the upcoming gubernatorial election next year. The citizens should have been cheerful and relieved that the three pairs of candidates have retained immense track records, compared to Ahmad Dhani or Haji Lulung who tried to get public attention in the beginning year. I belive that the following discussion related to the gubernatorial election would be more informative, educative, and comprehensive. Thus, the Jakartans deserve the best of the most qualified governor for the next period.

Teman Ahok: Another Independent Movement Not Yet Convincing

Welcoming 2016, DKI Jakarta Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama (Ahok) is expected to give better service for public. Ahok also expected that Jakartans will have “more loaded brains”, becoming cleverer, more religious and more prosperous.
So, what do you feel about Jakarta nowadays? Is it better than yesterday or just the same old stories? Since Ahok led this capital city on 19 November 2014substituting Jokowi, a lot of changes have happened in many aspects as he would continue the good and clean governance system (e-governance), for instance: the disclosure of corruption case in Jakarta Legislative Council (DPRD) on UPS system in several state senior high schools, the improvement of drainage system, assertive action on dismissal underperformed civil servants (PNS), etc.
Meanwhile, toward 2017 – year of Jakarta Governor Election (Pilkada), Ahok who had resigned from Gerindra in 2014, needs kind of basis to support him facing the upcoming Pilkada. As tit for tat, Teman Ahok (Ahok’s supporter movement) claimed its position to support in nominating incumbent DKI Jakarta Governor Ahok to the upcoming Pilkada through independent way.Based on temanahok.com, they have collected 555,033 KTP. Indeed, to become one of governor candidates, the independent candidate must collect several supports by submitting copies of KTP (at least 7.5% of total population, estimated around 750,000 KTP) and filling form provided by the General Elections Commission (KPU) as stipulated on the regulation PKPU No.9/2015 on the governor candidates. In addition, Teman Ahok also reported that they have collected Rp797,376,000 of campaign fund by their supporters per December 2015 despite there have been rumors circulating that say Teman Ahok is also funded by Bank Artha Graha International.
However, according to Indoprogress.com, Muhammad Ridha – one of the contributors – published an article about the illusion behind Ahok’s popularity. Ridha argued that the popularity, which comes up among public in line with Ahok’s bravery to reveal the Jakarta’s bureaucracy system which has been corrupted, distransparency and unaccountable, is just an illusion. Furthermore, Ridha suggested public to urge Ahok and his government to create particular regulations in form of public politic contribution improvement to hinder the upcoming regulations which will be ruled by certain elites or parties. This statement needs to be considered by Teman Ahok which is also being participated by many non-Jakartans in order to prevent any fanatic supporting actions ignoring other experts’ opinion.
Besides, Teman Ahok needs also to consider the way Ahok played in Indonesian politic ambience. Populi Center head Nico Harjanto said Teman Ahok needs to consider any possibilities that would be taken by Ahok whether to run as an independent or to start negotiating with political parties. Moreover, Nico added that Ahok’s problem is not how to gain support, but how to compete with candidates from the political parties.
So, will Teman Ahok survive to accompany Ahok until the election? And, will Ahok remain independent without any support by existing political parties until the election? I think that Teman Ahok should reflect its movement with previous independent candidate Faisal Basri-Biem Benjamin #BerdayaBareng2 which had collected 597,719 copies of KTP and Rp15 billions of campaign funds during 2012’s Pilkada.

Five Duos You Gotta Listen to

Music can be a daily soundtrack for every human being. People love music, they have their own favorit musicians; soloists, group, or even duo group. Despite consisting only two persons, duo group could also produce easy-listening and eargasm music by playing guitar and utilizing sythetizer. Now, I recommend you with five duos which you gotta listen to.

  • Kings Of Convenience

Consisting of Erlend Øye and Eirik Glambek Bøe, an indie folk-pop duo from Bergen, Norway, producing delicate tunes, calming voices, and intricate and subtle guitar melodies named Kings of Convenience, of which Øye and Bøe both compose and sing the songs, for instance; Caymand Islands, Misread, and I’d Rather Dance with You. The duo which was established in 1999 has produced four albums – Quiet Is the New Loud (2001), Versus (2001), Riot on an Empty Street (2004) and Declaration of Dependence (2009) which hit the third position on US Heat chart in 2010.
Reported by independent.co.uk, "the story of our band, the main story you need to know about, is that when the first record, Quiet is the New Loud, came out, in 2001... there was this really energetic record company [Astralwerks]," Øye says. "It was full of young people, who really wanted to do this, and I think Eirik was not at all aware of what putting out a record meant – promotion, playing, there was no end in sight, just releasing more albums and playing live, and it just seemed like he lost control of his life, Øye excitedly said.

  • Silampukau

In Indonesia, Eki Tresnowening and Kharis Junandharu through acoustic guitars and vocals played harmonically made Silampukau which comes from Surabaya to produce a brilliant debut album entitled Dosa, Kota dan Kenangan in mid 2015.
The album which had been worked since 2009, tells of Surabaya in a very noble way, about how people face challenges, from earning a living in the daytime while creating stories for the future inside their minds and, later, dancing the night away in the last leg of the day. Moreover, for the new album, the duo did not use a large distribution service, but worked independently by self-releasing the album. The duo also toured Jakarta and Bandung to promote their album later on.
Reported by thejakartapost.com, “for us, folk music is way bigger than punk rock. If punk rock teaches you to be a rebel, folk music leads you to scale it up. It has the ‘rebellion’ feel, ballads and, on top of all, it guides you to celebrate life. That’s what we do with Silampukau,” Kharis said.

  • She and Him

Forming in 2006, She & Him is an American indie duo consisting of Zooey Deschanel (vocals, piano, ukulele), whom become famous thorugh 500 Days of Summer, met M. Ward (guitar, production) on the set of the film The Go-Getter, in which Deschanel had a starring role. The duo has already produced five studio albums – Volume One (2008), Volume Two (2010), A Very She and Him Christmas (2011), Volume 3 (2013) and Classics (2014) – one EP and seven singles.
The duo produced must-to-see video clips with the unusual concept of clips. Deschanel and Ward whom accustomed with film production created several video clips with story plot, dancing performance and great visualization. For instance, Don’t Look Back (directed by Jeremy Konner) which mixed analogue and digital music equipments into a story. In short, you must have loved this duo when you find out their music video in Youtube. You may put smiles, clap your hands with the ideas visualized, and sometimes move your body while watching their videos.

  • Banda Neira

Being famous through Soundcloud – a global online audio distribution platform – a journalist Ananda Badudu and social worker Rara Sekar made Banda Neira into a more melodic tone of duo in Indonesia. Quoted by thejakartapost.com, “we found ourselves at a spontaneous gig where we were going to play Bon Iver’s songs. But we didn’t know what to call our band. After throwing about some alternatives Banda Neira was our favorite,” said Rara whom also a sibling of Isyana Saraswati.
They bring acoustic-format performance by guitar and glockenspiel into songs with several big topics including romance and politics theme in their debut album, Berjalan Lebih Jauh (2013). The album consisted of four songs including a song about the 1998 riot which were recorded in Jakarta while they were both there but the rest were produced while they were in different cities. Responding to thejakartapost.com, Ananda said that every day, he eats politics and heavy news. Thus, the more, the merrier; the more you read, the more inspiration you’ll get.

  • Endah N Rhesa

Different with She and Him and Banda Neira, Endah N Rhesa continues their partnership into love scene, of which they became husband and wife in 2009. Endah N Rhesa produced romantic and harmonious songs with tasty and skillful music talents, in which they have released four albums: Nowhere to Go (2009), Look What We’ve Found (2010), Escape (2013) and Seluas Harapan (2015). The latest album has finally consisted of Bahasa Indonesia lyric. Previously, Rhesa argued that it is not about the language which make them write English songs in prior albums; for them, music transcends all languages. Even if you do not understand the language, you understand the music and the meaning, Rhesa added.
Reported by thejakartapost.com, "initially we wanted to recruit more people to form a more conventional band. But we found no one suitable and decided to work with what we had. We had to accept the fact and do our best," Rhesa explained. "There are only two of us. We try to maximize each one. Endah uses acoustic guitar to keep the beat. I use an electric bass so that I am not limited in using my technique. Endah's voice is another instrument. With these three instruments, we went ahead," Rhesa said.
Meanwhile, in every their live performances, Endah N Rhesa always plays a song with intention to promote their album in the stage accidentally with current condition and the theme of event. They do that because they have to. They have to promote their album by their own because they set the duo in indie segment. That action made the audience throw claps and screams.

In short, there are other duos which I couldn’t mention to you in detail, but those duos are my top list duos you’d better listen to. Last but not least, you may update your mixtape with songs of those duos to fulfill your daily soundtrack.

Review: TOTS 2014 “Sweeney Todd: the Demon Barber of Fleet Street”

Salam Budaya!

Rasa-rasanya standing applause dan uang tiga puluh satu ribu rupiah masih sangat kurang sebagai apresiasi untuk teman-teman Theater of English Department (TED) yang tadi malam menghelat TED on The Stage (TOTS) 2014  dengan lakon “Sweeney Todd: the Demon Barber of Fleet Street”.

19.15 gong berbunyi tiga kali menandakan pementasan segera dimulai.

Keren.

(sumber: WA pribadi)

Kemudian, berlanjut ke scene Anthony yang menggoda Joanna dengan gombalan andalannya “I feel you, Joanna… I'll steal you…”

Setelah semua casts and crews naik ke panggung, Pak Seno – Dosen ED UNJ – kembali memberikan apresiasinya percis seperti TOTS 2013 “Of Mice and Men”.

It’s Worth to Pay.

Cuma, biar pandangan beda aja. Tapi yah, ini orang orang yang dulu sebel banget sama pemerintahan sebelumnya yg mau naikin harga BBM bersubsidi, sekarang malah iya iya aja, sama malah nyerang orang yang mengkritik.

Maksud gue, kritik itu kan sebagai penyeimbang. Masa elo, iya-iyain aja semua kebijakan pemerintah. Toh, kritik kita mah ga bakal punya efek langsung buat pemerintahan berjalan. Gerakan kritik kami yang sekarang mah ga sehebat kumpulan “salam dua jari” yang bikin konser luar biasa. Kritik kami sekarang mah, cupu.

Gini lho, gue ngeliatnya, serba terburu buru.

Nah, balik lagi, buat elo elo yang garis keras pro banget sama pemerintahan sekarang, be objective. Tapi, ya gitu, plis, be objective.

Kerja, Kabinet Kerja!

Mungkin terlalu telat deh buat hipster untuk nulis beginian, karena hypenya udah lewat jauh. Maklum, saking sibuk kerja jadi sulit buat punya waktu untuk nulis blog. Jadi, hari Minggu (26/10) lalu, Presiden J. resmi mengumumkan kabinetnya, Kabinet Kerja. Gue sih kurang terlalu suka penggunaan kata kerja di sini. Ada beberapa argumen pribadi gue.

Pertama, di Koran The Jakarta Post, Kabinet Kerja diterjemahkan menjadi Working Cabinet. Berbeda. Ada beberapa alternatif, seperti doing cabinet, occupying cabinet, operating cabinet, or running cabinet. Gue, pribadi menerjemahkan working cabinet as a cabinet which is worked, functioned, and activated.

When work is a pleasure life is joy! When work is a duty, life is slavery”. So, I expect Working Cabinet to Work.
